In the world of content management, open source alternatives have long been limited to web content management solutions. During the last couple of years we have seen the arrival of new open source projects which not only cover web content management but also other ECM disciplines like document management, digital asset management, collaboration, search and even records management. Another trend is the rise of commercial organizations which provide support and services around certain open source projects. Some of them – like Alfresco – are even the founding body of the project all together. During this seminar, John Newton, co-founder of Alfresco and former co-founder of Documentum, will provide you with an insight in the main differences between the open source and the traditional approach. He will also talk about recent trends in the world of ECM and what the impact is of open source on this market. A demo session of the Alfresco software will give you an idea of how things work and look in practice and we will also provide you with some interesting cases of real world adoption of Alfresco. Search engines have been a hot topic in recent years and the commercial market of search vendors has seen big turmoil in recent months. In the open source universe however, the Apache Lucene search project has become the de facto standard with a massive adoption in all types of projects and as embedded search engine in open source and commercial platforms. The last session of the seminar will focus on the myriad of web content management and portal solutions within the open source world. Who are the leading players? What are their strengths en weaknesses? What type of WCM tool might best suite your needs?
